Jabeur slides past Halep on Madrid clay

Ons Jabeur is just one win away from advancing to her maiden WTA 1000 final with victory over former world No.1 Simona Halep at the Madrid Open.

World No.10 Jabeur is the highest-ranked player in the semi-finals after she accounted for Halep 6-3 6-2.

Jabeur — whose only other WTA 1000 semi-final was in Indian Wells last year — was successful on an impressive 77.8 per cent of points on her first serve and converted four of her five break points against two-times Madrid champion Halep to seal the victory in just over an hour.

“It’s never easy to play Simona,” said Jabeur, who lost to Halep in Dubai earlier this year.

“Really happy with the fact that I took my revenge.

“I can see that I’m progressing in my game and in other stuff. I hope I can continue with this level to play the other matches.”

Jabeur will play qualifier Ekaterina for a spot in the final after the Russian accounted for American Amanda Anisimova 6-4 6-3.

Alexandrova became just the third qualifier to reach the last four in Madrid and while she is ranked 35 places below Jabeur she has won six of their seven prior meetings across all levels.

In the other semi-final, 12th-seeded American Jessica Pegula will face unseeded Swiss Jil Teichmann.

Pegula defeated home-crowd favourite Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-4 6-2 while Barcelona-born Teichmann eased past Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina 6-3 6-4 in their respective quarter-finals.
