Injury-free Clark wins again in UFC

Jessica-Rose Clark has won her first UFC fight in more than a year in convincing fashion in Las Vegas.

The Australian was taking no chances in her return from a serious knee injury and her wrestling-heavy performance contributed to a dominant unanimous decision victory over Joselyne Edwards.

Clark – who tore her ACL in a September 2020 win over Sarah Alpar – kept the pressure on Edwards throughout their 15-minute bout with two judges scoring the contest 30-27, while the other judge awarded it 29-28.

While unable to inflict any major damage on Edwards – the first Panamanian to win a fight in the UFC – Clark controlled the fight on the ground to make it two successive wins.

Queenslander Clark – who is now based just outside of San Francisco – was rarely in danger as she took down her opponent almost at will to improve her UFC record to 4-2.

“My grappling coach Adam Piccolotti is a stud. I’ve been wrestling with DC (Daniel Cormier) as well,” Clark said in her post-fight interview in the octagon.

“And I feel like between the two, I’m just going to keep getting better and better.”

In the main fight of the night, Marvin Vettori defeated Paulo Costa by unanimous decision in their five-round light heavyweight bout.

Vettori won 48-46 on all three cards – with Costa deducted a point in the second round for an accidental eye poke.

The bout was originally scheduled to be fought at middleweight but Costa came in well over the 186-pound limit, prompting the bump to 205 pounds.

Vettori (18-5-1) absorbed some big shots from Costa (13-2) early on but was able to outlast the Brazilian, who has now suffered his second consecutive loss.

“I know I have the biggest heart and biggest will… ,” Italian Vettori said.

“A lot of people said he wouldn’t be ready (because of the eight issue), but I feel a lot of it was a trick. He actually came pretty ready.”
