Incredible stories emerge from Perth’s surprise storm, with more wild weather expected

Incredible stories are beginning to emerge of how close many people came to serious injuries as Perth was battered by a ferocious summer storm, while more wild weather is on the way.

The terrifying system took just minutes to roll through and the clean up will take days or even weeks.

The summer super-storm rolled in and there was little warning before it hit, with our suburbs lashed by hail, heavy rain, thunder and lightning.

The system brought damage and destruction with roofs ripped off homes, trees uprooted and roads turned into rivers.

Lightning lit up the dark sky and even sparked a bushfire inWeather Melville.

Cars fell victim to falling trees. One vehicle in Wembley was crushed, the woman inside fortunate to walk away unscathed.

“There was a loud bang,” witness Trish Moroney said.

“We thought it was just thunder and lightning because the storm was blowing through.

“It was just unbelievable that they were able to get her out and that she was able to walk.”

As many as 21,000 homes were left without power in Perth overnight. By 5am this morning, 4000 remained in the dark.

More than 260 calls were made to emergency services for help.

“One of the really difficult parts of thunderstorm forecasting is just how quickly these things can form and give you little to no warning in terms of where they are actually going to occur,” Bureau of Meteorology spokesman Neil Bennett said.

But we aren’t out of the danger zone just yet, with more wild weather on the way.

Possible showers and storms are expected Thursday and Friday before the weather clears for Saturday and Sunday.
