A residential development of more than 100 homes in one of Bunbury’s growing suburbs is the latest sign of investor confidence in the city, Mayor Gary Brennan says.
The proposed 100 to 120 home development for Jeffrey Road in Glen Iris is the latest residential project put forward by private owners.
It follows in the footsteps of neighbouring project South Moorlands, a nearly 70ha proposal with an estimated 692 homes.
Both projects would provide a rates revenue boost for the city, with more than 2100 residents predicted to call South Moorlands home and a population of 290 estimated for the most recent development.
But Mr Brennan said it meant more than just a rates boost for Bunbury, with all signs pointing to investor confidence.
“It’s really exciting,” Mr Brennan said. “We have very limited green field sites left in our city, so I’m pleased to see that confidence by the private sector in Bunbury’s future.”
The most recent plans would see nearly 10ha of former grazing and hobby farm land transformed into a residential estate with public open space and road links.
Three property owners have joined forces to put the plans in motion.
Part-owner Robert Bunny — who grew up on part of the property — said it was obvious confidence was growing in Bunbury.
“It is no doubt a risk, but we thought it was the right time to rezone the land to either keep the property or develop it,” Mr Bunny said.
“It’s going to be a pretty big job and we don’t know how it’s going to go … but it’s worth really considering developing in Bunbury at the moment.”
It comes as Bunbury City Council and the Bunbury Development Committee’s Glen Iris Structure Plan Working Group continues its focus on the suburb.
Mr Brennan said the council was continuing to work with the State Government for a structure plan for the suburb.
“The city has also been liaising with the residents of Glen Iris to do improvements to the local neighbourhoods — footpaths, streetscapes, plantings,” he said.
“We’ve also been discussing with schools out there, the possibility of using some school grounds for public playground equipment.
“That has been a focus of ours at the city and that’ll continue to be the case.”
Plans for the suburb include initiatives around beautification, bushland management, community connection, land-use planning, littering and dumping, improvements to parks and open space, paths and kerbs, road safety, space activation, traffic management and street lighting.
