Hopes new towers will fix black spots

The Great Southern will receive five new towers to fix its mobile black spot areas.

Pingelly, Narrikup, Mettler, Cheynes Beach and Jerramungup Road will soon be equipped with new towers built under the fourth round of the Federal Government’s mobile black spot program. The $220 million program aims to deliver 180 new base stations across the country.

The announcement came after O’Connor MP Rick Wilson struggled to fix Salmon Holes’ mobile reception after the site was first identified in the black spot program four years ago

“We’re very hopeful we’ll see some progress there,” he said.

“Telstra are looking at some engineering options around some small cells and perhaps using the lighthouse, which will be handed over to (the Department of) Conservation, Biodiversity and Attractions.

“I will then be going to my minister and then the State Government to hope for a co-contribution.”
