Ryder’s daddo may have passed away but that’s not even the biggest tragedy in tonight’s episode. Bella isn’t impressed by artisanal cheese!
Nikau is keen to redeem himself after his uncle Tane cramped his style and ruined his cute date with Bella the night before.
Plus everyone keeps making fun of him for cooking soup, which explains all the vegetables.
Nikau, who is highly strung and wants their date to be “special”, seeks to the advice of Ryder who sadly doesn’t have many credentials in the dating department.
And speaking of Nikau’s anxieties, have the producers forgotten about the car he stole and the pending investigation?
Back to the date.
The boys seem to be hatching some elaborate plan over coffee. Ryder says he’s a natural at dating which is a bit rich coming from someone wearing a wetsuit in public but I was proven very wrong.
I think I can speak for everyone when I say that what happens next is the most impressive date I have ever seen.
It’s like a low key (and better in my opinion) version of The Bachelor complete with cheese boards, throw cushions and a tiny row boat. I have a thing for small water going vessels and I’m surprisingly excellent at rowing, so I am instantly won over.
But it seems the date does not have the same effect on Bella, who isn’t interested in artisanal cheese or staring into Nikau’s puppy dog eyes.
I want to stress to young viewers who may be navigating the perils of dating and emphasise that cheese will impress your date and Bella is the exception to the rule. Even lactose intolerant people will eat cheese.
Meanwhile Mackenzie has Tane on a very tight leash and he is relegated to clearing tables and moving boxes.
Bella figures out that Mac finds Tane’s bad boy charm undeniable and from then on, Mac proclaims out loud how great Ari (the guy she is dating) is, in the hopes she might actually believe it.
Mac and Ari have a quick lunchtime bedroom sesh but their antics are no where near as steamy as Tane and Mac’s.
Then Roo comes home. She’s been with Ryder’s dad at a palliative care facility.
Roo is holding Evan’s guitar and sounds stressed and we know that Evan has passed away.
And of course we can’t go a few days without talk of Jasmine, even if she doesn’t actually appear in the episode.
I’ll keep it brief since I know a lot of us are over her current storyline.
Irene is blaming herself for Jasmine leaving and has left countless strongly worded voice messages.
We also find out Jas has taken indefinite leave from her job and don’t know when she’ll be back. This does not bide well with Irene.
