Hip injury ends Josh Giddey’s maiden NBA season early

Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault has pulled the pin on Josh Giddey’s historic rookie NBA season due to a lingering hip injury.

The 19-year-old Australian last played about a month ago for the Thunder, who sit second-last in the Western Conference with a 21-52 record.

“It’s a tricky injury that’s a little unpredictable,” Daigneault said.

“I would not say it met or didn’t meet an expectation. We didn’t really have an expectation.”

The teenager became the youngest person to register an NBA triple-double, the first teenager to notch three consecutively and managed four in total during his incredible first season.

He averaged 12.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 6.4 assists, shooting at 41.9 per cent from the field and 26.3 per cent from beyond the three-point line.

Giddey’s numbers, incredible poise and highlight-reel passing game were enough to see him sweep all four Western Conference Rookie of the Month awards this season.
