‘Heartbreaking scene’: One lifeless, three critical in horror boat accident near Bulli Beach, NSW

One person has died after a boat capsized off the coast of Wollongong in what a senior paramedic has called a “heartbreaking scene”.

Emergency services were called to the waters of Waniora Point in Bulli just after 10.15am on Sunday, following reports a fishing boat had capsized.

Eight people on board the boat were rescued and taken to shore.

Eight crews and three Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter’s including three critical care doctors and three critical care paramedics were dispatched to the scene

Onlookers performed CPR on several people until paramedics arrived.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said one person could not be revived and died at the scene.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Norman Rees – a paramedic of 34 years – said it was one of the most difficult jobs he had attended in his career.

“It was a heartbreaking scene – what was meant to be a great day out on the water has turned into an absolute disaster,” Mr Rees said.

“Initial reports suggested there was several people clinging to the side of a boat that was quickly capsizing.”

Mr Rees thanked those who helped out.

“I want to say a huge thank you to the surf lifesavers and bystanders that risked their lives to try and save these people.

“They gave the them every chance of survival.”

Two people were separately flown to St George Hospital and Liverpool Hospital in critical conditions.

The spokesman said three people were taken to Wollongong Hospital – one in a critical condition, two in a stable condition.

Two other people were assessed on scene but did not require transport.
