Kyle Abbott’s maiden County Championship 10-wicket match haul set up Hampshire’s fourth Division One win of the season and all-but ended Somerset’s title charge.
Abbott backed up his five scalps in the first innings by taking 6-40 to bowl Somerset out for 116 and end the match with analysis of 11-71.
Jimmy Adams then confirmed the victory, which eases Hampshire’s relegation fears, with an unbeaten 25 as the home side chased down 75 to win by six wickets.
Somerset will have to wait until the conclusion of Surrey’s fixture with Worcestershire to find out if they are still in with a chance of lifting the trophy this season.
Alex Hughes was the chief beneficiary of a rain-shortened day at Wantage Road as he made his way to 74 not out, moving Derbyshire to 118-4 in reply to Northamptonshire’s 255. SCORECARD
With only 29 overs possible in the morning session, Hughes moved from his overnight 38 to a fourth 50 in consecutive Division Two matches.
Northants did strike twice in the session, with Tom Lace, for 38, and Gary Wilson, for just three, edging and driving to Ben Curran at point.
