Greyhound trainer Steve Withers pledges part of Million Dollar Race winnings to Telethon

WA greyhound trainer and owner Steve Withers has won a chance at a $1 million prize in the world’s richest dog race.

And the whole State will be behind his homebred chaser Tommy Shelby on Friday night, with a win meaning 10 per cent of the earnings — $50,000 — will go to Telethon.

With he and his wife Kira having three young children of their own, aged 6, 10 and 14, Mr Withers said the charity was one close to his heart.

“It’s a wonderful West Australian tradition that supports children and children are precious to us all,” he said.

After winning the WA Sprint Championship to secure a place in the semi-finals at Wentworth Park in NSW, Tommy Shelby, which is owned in partnership with the Harders family, won the chance to compete in The Million Dollar Race at the weekend.

Mr Withers said he was “proud” of Tommy Shelby, named after a character from TV show Peaky Blinders.

“He’s quite special,” he said. “We’ve had him since he was a puppy and now he’s just my little buddy.”
