Geraldton country week & Abrolhos goalkeeper Kyron Sheffield looking for golden gloves in pursuit of pro dream

Young goalkeeper Kyron Sheffield isn’t sitting around.

The 16-year-old Abrolhos FC and Geraldton country week stopper has two awards in two senior seasons between the sticks, and is looking to make it a third in three.

And if he has his way, he’ll go further than that, with a professional career the dream.

“I’d love to play for Liverpool,” Sheffield said.

“Or anywhere, really.

“And I’d love to play for Australia at the Olympics.

“I want to show what the young kids are about. We’re not here to sit back.”

He has made some solid progress on those goals already.

Showing precocious skill from a young age, he won the golden gloves award for reserves goalkeeper of the season aged just 14 in 2020, and went back-to-back in 2021, sharing the award for best shot stopper with Olympic FC’s Alex Dewers.

He played a full season of reserves and made seven league appearances towards the back end of the season, often playing two full matches on a Saturday and then in the juniors on a Sunday as Abrolhos made the semifinals in the league knockout cup and won the under-16s competition.

He said he was also hoping to coach this season and help an even younger generation of players start making the right moves.

After promising trial at National Premier Leagues youth level — the highest grade of State club soccer — and a country week campaign in the off-season, 2022 beckons for a promising young keeper.
