A skier riding a lift at Vail ski area spotted the body of a man lying face up in Gore Creek near Lionshead Tuesday morning.
The Eagle County coroner will determine the cause of death and identify the man, who was found just after 9 a.m., Vail Police Department Det. Sgt. Luke Causey said.
The man’s sunglasses were found upstream, suggesting that he may have fallen in the creek before he died. He had a cut on the bridge of his nose, which could indicate he fell and landed on his face, Causey said.
The man, who is white, is believed to 40 to 50 years old. Because the body was frozen, authorities were unable to check to see if he had identification in his pockets.
“He is extremely frozen so we’re trying to thaw him out,” Causey said.
The man was not dressed in ski gear. A backpack was found a few feet from the body. It contained a Vail Daily newspaper with a Monday date on it, car keys and a first aid kit, Causey said.
