Fremantle speedster Philipa Seth has turned to her teammates to help fast-track her long-awaited move to the midfield.
And who better to lean on than the league’s best players.
A damaging half-back in her first three seasons at AFLW level, the Dockers have long flirted with shifting Seth on ball but finally decided to pull the trigger after drafting Claremont star Jess Low.
Now set to write a new career chapter in one of the league’s most competitive lines, Seth has been gifted the perfect yardstick.
“When you’ve got the calibre of people like Turbo (Kiara Bowers) and (Hayley) Miller in there, that’s what I’m basing my AFLW level and expectations on,” she said.
“We happen to have the league’s best player in our team so running one-on-on with Turbo will hold me in good stead when I come up against other elite AFLW midfielders.
“I love being around the ball a bit more and getting to use my strength and running ability.”
Seth’s midfield education started during the WAFLW season, playing several matches exclusively as a midfielder at East Fremantle.
“It was good to learn how to take hands out of the ruck and develop those skills,” she said.
The 27-year-old also expects to instinctively retain her defensive mindset which may allow Miller and Bowers to have stints up forward.
Fremantle held an intra-club on Saturday morning, upping the intensity even further across four 12-minute quarters.
Bowers was influential as the white team defeated the purple team five goals to two.
Ebony Antonio and Gabby O’Sullivan were also lively as were uncapped pair Aine Tighe and Ann McMahon who finished with two goals apiece.
“It was good to get into the swing of a game day set up, going through proper rotations, having the runners out there. It lifts the intensity and makes it more game-like,” Seth said.
“It was a high-pressure game today and tested the skills a lot more. Turbo is back to hitting hard so I can’t wait until she’s inflicting that on someone else.
“I can’t wait until we can unleash Aine to the AFLW world. We know what she’s capable of and I can’t wait for everyone else to see that as well.
“And with Ann, just watching her, you get the popcorn out because she’s got such clean skills.”
