Freiburg lose again as Frankfurt double-up

Third-placed Freiburg suffered their second straight defeat after an unbeaten start to the season when they lost 2-0 at home to improving Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.

Freiburg unluckily lost 2-1 at leaders Bayern Munich before the international break to end a run of 10 games without defeat and goals from Jesper Lindstrom and Filip Kostic on Sunday condemned them to another reverse, this time deserved.

“With a bit more precision we could have maybe pulled one back but we didn’t and Frankfurt stood firm so we couldn’t break through,” Freiburg midfielder Vincenzo Grifo said.

Mainz, who have the second-best defence in the league behind Freiburg having conceded 12, drew 1-1 at home with fellow mid-table side Cologne in the final match of the weekend programme.

Promising young forward Jonathan Burkardt put Mainz ahead with a classy goal before half-time, his fifth in five Bundesliga games. But Salih Oezcan levelled soon after the interval.

Frankfurt have had a roller-coaster start to the season under new coach Oliver Glasner but took the lead in Freiburg on 34 minutes through Lindstrom’s first Bundesliga goal.

A mix-up in the home defence meant the ball ran kindly for the Dane, who finished superbly with the outside of his boot as the visitors were rewarded for their attacking intent.

There was an element of fortune about Frankfurt’s second just before the break, Kostic’s free-kick from deep missing everyone in the box and curling into the net via the post.

Freiburg remain a point above fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who beat Bochum 1-0 on Saturday.

“This win was very, very important to us. We had a bit of luck in the second half but we defended well as a team,” said Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp, whose side next host Antwerp in the Europa League on Thursday.
