Free craft workshop for LGBTQIA+ youths in Kalgoorlie-Boulder

Goldfields Pride will be hosting a free LGBTQIA+ art workshop for youths at Black Crow Studios on April 13.

Goldfields Pride chairperson Em Davis said local artist Fox and Fawn would be leading the jewellery-making workshop, which sprang from the need for more safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ youth in town.

They said art was often therapeutic and could also create meaningful connections, which were easier to form than by having a group discussion.

“So partly, it’s about just having a space where they can go, that is safe and can meet other LGBTQIA people and socialise,” they said.

“But pairing that with an activity like art just means that there’s actually something to do, so it makes it more interesting.”

Em Davis said there were only 20 spots available, with half already filled.

They said the event was made possible by a grant from the Department of Communities and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder providing marketing support.

They said Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents had been expressing their support for increased visibility of LGBTQIA+ community members, and were happy knowing there was a group in town they could go to.

The event will be at Black Crow Studios from 2pm-4pm on April 13, with bookings necessary.
