Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt have made a strong start to the season with a Daichi Kamada double inspiring them to a 4-0 German Cup first round win at Magdeburg.
Kamada slotted a calm opening goal from Filip Kostic’s cross just three minutes in and repeated the trick from inside the box on the hour.
Second division Magdeburg missed a glorious chance to level immediately when Kevin Trapp repeated his penalty heroics from Seville by saving a spot kick from Andreas Mueller and saw Leon Bell Bell hit the bar on the rebound.
Jesper Lindstrom followed up on a break away to double the lead in the 32nd minute and though Magdeburg fought on, Kamada eventually put the tie beyond them and new signing Lucas Alario added the fourth in the last minute.
Frankfurt will compete in the Champions League this season following their European success and looked confident throughout, with World Cup winner Mario Gotze having an assured 79-minute debut on his return to Germany from PSV Eindhoven.
Goals in either half from Romano Schmid and Mitchell Weiser ensured Werder Bremen progressed a 2-1 win at Energie Cottbus.
Bremen secured promotion back to the Bundesliga at the first time of asking last term and secured a morale-boosting victory in Cottbus over fourth-tier opposition.
Chemnitz, another fourth-level outfit, led Bundesliga club Union Berlin for 90 seconds in the second half through Tobias Mueller’s header but debutant Jordan Siebatcheu equalised immediately to force extra time.
And substitute Kevin Behrens headed in a corner in the 113th minute to secure a 2-1 win for the capital side, who were semi-finalists last term.
“We have to analyse the game exactly because we definitely have to improve with the ball,” Union captain Christopher Trimmel said.
Union avoided the fate of city rivals Hertha, who exited on Sunday to follow fellow Bundesliga sides Bayer Leverkusen and Cologne in crashing out the competition. There is a Berlin derby to open the Bundesliga this coming weekend.
“I’m very much looking forward to it, the stadium will rock, and , and I hope we can have a good game,” added Trimmel.
Second division Darmstadt also progressed 3-0 at third division Ingolstadt.
