Four killed in Indonesia minimart collapse

A building housing a convenience store has collapsed in Indonesia’s South Kalimantan province, killing four people and injuring nine others.

Thirteen people were in the Alfamart store, including workers and shoppers, when it caved in on Sunday, district police chief Donni Hadi Santoso.

Rescuers on Tuesday pulled one dead body and two critically injured survivors from the rubble, he said

“We believe that we have found all the victims,” he said, adding the cause of the collapse was being investigated.

Earlier in the day, provincial police chief Inspector General Rikwanto had said 16 people were in the store at the time of the incident.

He said the building was 20 years old and was built on peatland.

“Maybe it was not in compliance with the building code,” he said.

Alfamart is Indonesia’s leading convenience store chain, with outlets across the archipelago.
