Former West editor Brett McCarthy joins Mathias Cormann’s office

Former editor of The West Australian Brett McCarthy has taken a job with WA senator and Liberal powerbroker Mathias Cormann.

McCarthy, who resigned from Seven West Media six months ago after 10 years as editor of The West, will be Senator Cormann’s senior strategic adviser.

The father of four will provide advice on State and Federal matters relating to the senator’s role as Minister for Finance and Leader of the Government in the Senate.

He starts work on Monday and while based in Perth will spend sitting weeks in Canberra.

“I’m very much looking forward to joining Mathias Cormann’s team,” McCarthy said yesterday.

“After almost 10 years as editor of The West and more than 30 years in media I believe I’m well placed to contribute strongly across a broad range of issues. I’m also excited to be working as part of the wider Morrison Government team.”

Senator Cormann said McCarthy would play “a key role on our team, helping to shape and promote our agenda nationally, while also being a very senior contact point for business and community stakeholders in Western Australia”.

McCarthy worked for News Corp, rising to the position of deputy editor of The Sunday Telegraph in Sydney before coming to Perth in 2001.
