Former PM’s public criticism of Morrison ‘mean-spirited and bitter’

Malcolm Turnbull’s public criticism of his successor Prime Minister Scott Morrison makes him look “mean-spirited and bitter,” says former foreign minister Alexander Downer.

His remarks come after Mr Turnbull accused Mr Morrison of being a liar and having a “reputation for lying”.

Mr Turnbull made the comments at the UN climate conference in Glasgow, endorsing French President Emmanuel Macron’s assessment that Mr Morrison was a “liar”.

“He and Kevin Rudd need to understand how the Australian public perceive these sorts of interventions,” Mr Downer told Sky News Australia.

“You’ve been prime minister – you’ve had your time.

“If they continue to attack their successors in this way … they look sort of mean-spirited and bitter.

“It looks as though they’re bitter about their own demise from power and they’re playing out some sort of act of vengeance – it’s what it looks like and they would deny that’s what they’re doing.”

Mr Downer said it would be better for the pair to follow the model of former prime ministers Julia Gillard, John Howard and Sir Robert Menzies in “getting on with the rest of their lives”.
