Former Australian Test captain Ian Chappell accuses Steve Smith of ‘white anting’ current captain Tim Paine

Former Australian Test captain Ian Chappell has accused Steve Smith of ‘white anting’ current Test captain Tim Paine on day four of the second Test against Pakistan.

Smith is currently banned from any leadership positions until the end of March next year for his involvement in the Cape Town saga, but it hasn’t stopped him from helping Paine on the field.

However, the 76-year-old believes Smith’s assistance has overstepped the mark.

“I tell you what I don’t like to see, Steve Smith is moving a few fieldsmen around,” Chappell said on Macquarie Sports Radio.

“He did have a chat with Tim Paine, trying to talk Tim Paine into moving a fielder on the off-side, but I’m not sure Tim Paine moved him as far as Steve Smith wanted.

“Steve Smith started moving him, I hate to see that.”

Chappell believing the tactics overstepped what’s required of Smith, despite the experienced cricket knowledge the world number one batsman boasts.

“England used to do it a bit, blokes other than the captain and I always felt it was white anting the captain.”

Australia is on the cusp of victory on day four at the Adelaide Oval, which would see the hosts wrap up the series 2-0 against Pakistan.
