Firefighters tackle blaze at Karnet Prison Farm

A fire is tonight burning inside a low-security prison at Serpentine.

About 9.30pm on Monday the Department of Fire and Emergency Services responded to reports of a structure fire at Karnet Prison Farm.

Initial reports said several fire alarms alerted prison staff and prisoners of the blaze, which is understood to be inside the facility.

At least three fire crews including one each from Mundijong and Serpentine are on scene and have assembled in the facility’s carpark where a staging area is being set up.

It is understood fireys are liaising with prison security officers.

A WA Police spokesman said all prisoners were secure and accounted for, and that police were attending the incident.

At 10.30pm the cause of the fire was still unknown.
