Festival feast for film fans

The 2019 BREC International Film Festival is ready and raring to go and will be officially launched on January 10.

For five weeks over summer, film fans will be treated to an extensive and diverse range of films from around the globe.

BREC executive director Fiona de Garis said the 2019 program included a fantastic selection of films from some of the world’s most celebrated indi filmmakers.

The festival will open with the investigative documentary The Cleaners, centred on the darker sides of social media and the moderators hired to clean up the internet.

Woman at War is an Icelandic drama telling the story of an eco-warrior who declares war on the aluminium industry.

One of the feature titles of 2019 will be the Palestinian comic drama Wajib.

A product of Palestinian writer-director Annemarie Jacir, the film explores the lives of Israel-based Palestinians and the real-life story of father and son Mohammad and Saleh Bakri.

Shoplifters is a crime-drama by Japanese director Hirokazu Kre-eda centre around a poverty stricken family living in Tokyo.

Another feature title this year will be Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War, an epic romance about two mismatched lovers, caught between the East and the West in 1950s Europe.

The romantic and sophisticated French drama Let the Sunshine In stars Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche.

Also screening will be the heart-stopping drama Custody from award-winning writer and director Xavier Legrand, the feel-good comedy C’est la Vie and the award-winning crime thriller Dogman.

Dogman will not be the only thriller screening, joined by Ziad Doueiri’s courtroom drama The Insult.

Paolo Sorrentino’s biopic Loro will explore life under the eye of Europe’s most infamous politician, Silvio Berlusconi, while the nerve-jangling thriller The Guilty will have audiences on the edge of their seats.
