Explosions hit two Afghan cities, kill 14

More than a dozen people have been killed and wounded in a series of explosions that targeted civilians in the Afghan capital and the country’s northern province of Balkh, officials said.

An explosion targeted worshippers inside Hazrat Zakarya mosque in Kabul, police spokesperson Khalid Zadran said on Wednesday.

At least 22 wounded people were taken to the hospital run by the Italian non-governmental organisation (NGO) Emergency.

Five were already dead upon arrival, the NGO added.

At least nine people were killed and 15 others wounded in three back-to-back explosions in Mazar-e-Sharif city, provincial police spokesperson Mohammad Asif Waziri told dpa.

The attacks were caused by explosive devices placed inside three passenger minibuses in police districts 5 and 10 of the city, police added.

“All of the victims are civilians, including women and children. We are still admitting wounded people to the hospital and trying to save their lives,” a hospital source said.

A wave of serious attacks has been rocking Afghanistan. The terrorist militia Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the majority of the attacks.

In recent months, more than 100 people have been killed in attacks on mosques, religious minorities and schools.
