Exhibition match | The West Australian

Representatives from three Perth lacrosse clubs will travel to Busselton for an exhibition match on March 23 for only the second game of lacrosse in the South West.

Phoenix Lacrosse Club is based in the Perth southern suburbs and holds the honour of being the oldest current WA Lacrosse club, founded in 1896.

The Alkimos Pirates is the State’s newest lacrosse club, leading the charge in developing the sport in Perth’s northern suburbs.

The Wanneroo-Joondalup Lacrosse Club is WA’s largest lacrosse club, recently won a nationwide social media competition, and is ranked No.1 for social media followers.

Phoenix Lacrosse Club vice-president Aaron Williams said all three prestigious clubs would participate, with the goal of educating people and growing the sport in the South West.

“It’s a sport we all love and the idea is to publicise it to give them a chance to fall in love with it as well,” he said.

“If there was a Busselton team, we would travel down to play here.”

The sport was first played by North American indigenous people in the 17th century, and there are now 38 countries registered with the Federation of International Lacrosse.

Australia is ranked No.4 in the world. “The exhibition match will be a great opportunity for residents from the Busselton and Dunsborough area to check out what is regularly referred to as the fastest game on two legs,” Williams said.

“Some high-quality lacrosse will be on show, with 15-year-old Australian under-19s player Ethan Moir playing. He’s a genuine superstar of the future.”

The Busselton Hockey Stadium will be hosting the event.

Food and drinks will be available.

The first game will begin at 10.30am.
