Ex-footballer jailed for choking woman

A former AFL recruit has been jailed for choking a woman so she couldn’t breathe, then kicking down a man’s door and threatening to kill him.

Luke Trew put his hands around the woman’s throat until she could not breathe in southwest Victoria and proceeded to cut his own forehead with a knife

“Do you want to see me kill myself?” he told her in February 2019.

He left in the woman’s car and with another, bigger, knife, and called police five times in 30 minutes. He told the local station someone was going to die that night because police would shoot him.

Trew then kicked in the door of another man he claimed to be a pedophile, sat on his bed and threatened to cut his throat.

Trew was jailed in Victoria’s County Court on Tuesday for four years over the terrifying incidents in and around Apollo Bay.

The 42-year-old must serve two years and three months before becoming eligible for parole.

He was recruited by the West Coast Eagles, Western Bulldogs and Essendon in the 1990s, but did not make his AFL debut, and played in the WAFL.

Trew had a history of drug problems, including with ice, and was at the pub when he became hostile the night of the assault.

At his second victim’s house, Trew again called police. They asked to speak to the other man, but Trew said he couldn’t speak because he had socks in his mouth.

There was no evidence raised in court that suggested the victim was actually a pedophile.

Trew did not physically harm him and was arrested without incident.

He pleaded guilty to one count each of common assault and aggravated burglary.

Judge Fiona Todd said Trew’s first victim had been terrified, while the second remained shaken and feared his attacker would return and kill him.

Acting for Trew, lawyer Daniel Sala previously labelled his client’s behaviour “manic”, and said he had been dealing with a medication change at the time.

Trew was released from custody on bail in March 2019 and was able to play for a local Apollo Bay football club while awaiting the outcome of his case.
