Duff and Quarters: Should Fremantle trade for out-of-favour Jared Polec for a bargain-bucket value?

North Melbourne’s Jared Polec has fallen out of favour with coach Rhyce Shaw but with no sign of a return to the Roos’ best 22, should Fremantle consider trading for the three-club player?

On this week’s episode of The Duff and Quarters Podcast The West Australian’s chief footy writer Mark Duffield said there could be a spot at the Dockers for the formerly lorded AFL talent, but only if the right price.

“(Freo coach) Justin Longmuir flagged the need for outside run and speed, does Jared Polec fit the bill and what does he cost for a trade?” Duffield said.

“How much is North Melbourne going to pay? Polec is on $700,000 a year, you do not take Polec if you’re paying the full $700k.

“You pay 300/400k and you say to North you’re going to have to come up with the other 200/300k.”

Polec has played 138 games between Brisbane, Port Adelaide and now North Melbourne but recently lined up with Collingwood when the Roos helped fill the Pies’ reserves side in a scratch-match in Queensland.

Coach Shaw seems to have lost all faith in the 27-year-old and Duffield questioned the tactics used by North Melbourne’s young coach.

“Clearly he’s out of favour with Rhyce Shaw,” Duffield continued.

“Polec had to run around for Collingwood (in a reserves scratch match) on the weekend and we all saw what North Melbourne did in their effort against the Suns, they could have used Jared Polec,

“Shaw seems to be big on this fierce, combative style but that only takes you so far and I think they’ve hit the wall.

“One of the maturity things for a coach is to understand that yes you may preach a certain style of game but there is always room for someone bringing something very different.

“I find the whole North Melbourne strategy is bemusing, Brad Scott wanted to do a rebuild, the club didn’t want to do a rebuild and thought they were in contention.”
