Dortmund top Bundesliga after tight win

Borussia Dortmund have secured three more points to go top of the Bundesliga with a tight 1-0 home win against Hoffenheim.

They have 12 points and will be hoping for a draw in Saturday’s table-topper between Union Berlin and champions Bayern Munich, both with 10 points.

Dortmund captain Marco Reus scored the only goal of the evening in the 16th minute, during a first half in which Hoffenheim had no shots on target.

Julian Brandt cushioned a pass into the box, where it first found Jude Bellingham, but Reus was the one to fire the ball past ‘keeper Oliver Baumann.

Anthony Modeste and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens missed good opportunities before the break and Dortmund lost steam in the second half.

Hoffenheim were the team closer to scoring in the second part of the game but, despite the thin advantage, the home side managed to avoid a late setback.

Just some two weeks ago they collapsed against Werder Bremen, conceding three late goals within two minutes.

“We did well in the first half,” Reus told broadcasters DAZN, but recognised the team lost power after the break, adding Dortmund “have to be more cold-hearted up front.”

Hoffenheim are fifth with nine points.

“We will take this defeat home and will see where we made mistakes. In any case, very disappointing,” midfielder Sebastian Rudy told DAZN.

Teammate Grischa Promel added: “It was not enough from us.”
