Dongara local Roxanne Roux comes good as Fremantle Dockers beat Richmond Tigers by five goals in AFLW

Mid West AFLW star Roxanne Roux got in on the action as Fremantle dispatched Richmond by five goals on Saturday to make it three wins from three games.

The Dongara local kicked a goal and a behind for the Dockers after an interrupted start to the season, placing her among her team’s top contributors on the scoresheet alongside Gemma Houghton (2.2) and Kara Antonio (2.1).

The game finished 11.11 (77) to 7.5 (47) at the Swinburne Centre.

Fremantle coach Trent Cooper said though Roux’s start to the season had been disrupted and she sat out the derby against West Coast in round one, he expected her to come good.

“Roxy’s had an interrupted pre-season with a few minor injuries, which has meant she hasn’t been able to complete the load that will have her ready to perform at AFLW level just yet,” Cooper said.

“We expect her to come to hand pretty quickly.

“It’s a long season and we just didn’t want to risk her.

“She’s had a quad issue and minor knee issue to deal with and she’s over both of those.

“It’s a long season.

“We’re taking no risks with players at this stage of the season when we’ve got such a fit and healthy squad in general.”

He said the strength of the squad had given him a welcome selection headache, with several players who might have had a shout for a game sitting out early rounds.

The Dockers were coming into Saturday’s match off the back of the announcement that the WA border won’t reopen on February 5 as previously planned.

But they put any frustration behind them and kicked the first five goals of the final quarter.

Fremantle exited last year’s finals series in the opening week, but the Dockers are quickly emerging as genuine premiership contenders after adding the Tigers to wins over Greater Western Sydney and cross-town rivals West Coast.

Showing the strength at the top of the table, Adelaide, Collingwood and Melbourne are also unbeaten.

Fremantle are second behind the Crows.
