Carl Benjamin — also known as DJ Rev CB — has been bumping tunes while Goldfields Cyclassic riders cross the Menzies finish line for the past five years.
The Perth-based DJ travels across regional WA in his orange mini-van to animate various events.
DJ Rev CB said he had been a DJ and MC for 20 years, mostly at weddings, and had now turned to a more rural audience.
While on his way to Leonora’s Golden Gift five years ago, he said the organisers were looking for some music.
As he had his equipment with him, he offered to spin as the cyclists rolled into town, and the rest was history.
“I just play anything it’s basically a little bit of country, a little bit of rock and when more of them get in, I up the beats a little bit more, I’ve just started getting into a bit of country hip hop and country rap,” he said.
DJ Rev CB said the riders never danced, as they were too tired after the 132km St Barbara Menzies Classic/Chas Egan Memorial Race from Kalgoorlie-Boulder to Menzies.
He told the Kalgoorlie Miner he pumped music as they left the starting line on their way to Leonora for stage two, with locals coming out to enjoy the tunes as riders departed.
However, when the riders rolled into town, DJ Rev CB was too busy filming them crossing the finish line to DJ, his pre-programmed tracks playing in the background as the crowd cheered the exhausted cyclists.
