Diamond days are numbered for family

Kalgoorlie Diamond Jewellers will spend its last Christmas in Kalgoorlie-Boulder this year before shutting its doors for good early next year.

The jewellery store has been running on Hannan Street since 1992, with owners Linda and Greg Black buying the business 13 years later.

Ms Black completed her apprenticeship with Rogers Jewellers and worked at Sheedy’s before deciding to open her own store in 2005.

After moving to Port Douglas in recent years, the couple’s daughter Carleen has been the family face of the store, but with plans to expand her family next year and her parents enjoying living in Queensland, the family decided not to find another space when their Hannan Street lease runs out next year and the building is developed.

“I think it will be a bit sad,” she said. “It has been a really big year for our family at the moment so we probably haven’t had time for it to sink in, but once my mum is back and we start the little things like packing things away it will hit her.”

Ms Black said many of the store’s small group had been with the family for more than a decade and it would be an end of an era for the crew, as well as their customers. “People are a bit lost,” she said.

“Some of them have come to us from Sheedy’s so we’ve known most of our customer base for a very long time and for most of them it will be a big loss.”

She said the store was holding a sale in the lead-up to Christmas.
