Denver to host 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup games

Denver has been selected as a host city for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the regional soccer federation announced Thursday.

Denver is one of 15 venues across 13 U.S. metro areas that will host the biannual tournament, featuring international soccer teams from North and Central America and the Caribbean.

“Denver is honored to once again host one of the major soccer tournaments in the world,” Matthew Payne, executive director of the Denver Sports Commission, said in a statement. “The city greeted the 2017 Gold Cup with large, energetic crowds of soccer fans, and The Mile High City is ready for another big matchup next summer. With seven professional sports teams, including strong support for soccer and Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids, Denver remains an ideal sports city for major international events.”

The groups and schedule will be announced next year.

Six nations are already qualified for the 16-team tournament by virtue of reaching of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Hexagonal qualifier: Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States.
