Huddersfield manager David Wagner says any new signing that helps the club stay in the Premier League will become an instant hero.

Huddersfield are among a number of top-flight clubs to have approached Leicester about Shinji Okazaki, according to Sky sources.

But with Huddersfield bottom of the Premier League, having lost their last nine games in all competitions, Wagner says there is a chance for any new face to make a name for themselves in the club’s history.

“Yes, obviously this is the truth,” said Wagner. “Everybody who joins us in this window, and when we can bring this season to a successful end, this name will always be linked with the success of the second part of the season.

“They can come here and build their history in this football club. Everybody knows how difficult this task is but I think that everybody also knows that performance wise and even from the results we are not miles away.

“We have nine defeats but seven by one goal. It’s very narrow but we have to turn this (around) and obviously it would help if we can bring some quality to our club.

“Players who are known in the Premier League will help because we don’t have the time to give them to settle in.

“Usually foreign players who are not used to the Premier League will need (time) so the list of targets is not longer, it is probably shorter.”

Huddersfield travel to Cardiff on Saturday, with the Welsh club just two points clear of the relegation zone and Wagner admits it is a must-win game.

“Yes, I would say so”,” he added. “The longer you don’t have the winning feeling the more desperate you get.

“This is why this is a very important game for us, it’s a game which we have to win and it’s a game which can affect our season massively.

“I know it is my responsibility. I have had responsibility since I arrived for this football club. This means not only the three years but the last six weeks as well.

“The last six weeks were not what we wanted to happen. They were not the ambitions I have and I am responsible for it.

“This is what I take on the chin and we are together. Every individual player as well has to take it on the chin and has to step up and take the responsibility for what is now in front of us.

“This is the Cardiff game where we have to be at our best, where we really have to make it clear that we have to win this football match.”
