Darwin hit with by 6.2 magnitude earthquake

Darwin has felt the effects of a 6.2 magnitude earthquake which caused buildings across the capital city to shake.

Locals reported feeling tremors for around 30 seconds after 12.00pm on Friday, with the quake originating from across the ocean in Timor.

The Bureau of Meteorology has told concerned locals there is no tsunami threat as a result of the earthquake.

GeoScience Australia reported the earthquake in Timor had a magnitude of 6.2 and a depth of 65km.

It came after a 2.5 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 5km hit Tennant Creek around an hour earlier.

Rocked locals quickly took to social media to share their shock, after seeing buildings move and the ground shake for around half a minute.

“Wow I just felt the earth move here in Darwin! An earthquake just shook our Office building here in Casuarina,” one posted on Facebook.

“Just had an earthquake at Darwin. Just a little shake nothing to serious,” another said.

“The house here in Darwin was rocking! Hoping people in Timor have not experienced too much damage in that earthquake,” another commented.
