Danish queen delays golden jubilee events

Danish Queen Margrethe plans to greatly curtail the celebration of the golden jubilee of her accession to the throne on January 14 due to the coronavirus situation in the country.

The royal family announced on Friday that most events will be postponed until late summer in northern Europe so that the public can attend.

These include the changing of the guard at Amalienborg Palace Square, where the queen and the royal family will appear on the balcony, the lunch at Copenhagen City Hall, the gala performance at the Royal Theatre, the festive service at Copenhagen Cathedral and the gala dinner at Christiansborg Palace, it said in a statement.

The 81-year-old will not be completely alone on the day of the 50th anniversary itself, however. Her meeting with the government and a reception in parliament are still to take place.

Margrethe II of Denmark ascended to the throne on January 14, 1972, upon the death of her father, Frederick IX.

In Denmark, new coronavirus infections are at a record high, which is why the government announced on Friday that theatres, museums and other cultural institutions are to close.
