Dancers and dads put best foot forward

The Katie Virgo Dance Academy is gearing up for its final performance tomorrow after owner Katie Virgo made the tough decision earlier this year to close the business after 15 years.

To mark the occasion, several students from Miss Virgo’s first class have returned and will be performing onstage alongside the academy’s group of jazz, tap, ballet, contemporary and acrobatic dancers.

Miss Virgo said she would miss her “babies” but she was excited for everyone to see the concert on Saturday.

“This is my final show, and it’s very, very special and very different,” she said.

The dad dance class will be making a special appearance onstage this weekend — a class that has grown from six brave blokes when they first performed on the 10th anniversary of the academy to 14 men, who Miss Virgo says she had successfully turned into “divas”.

“They are amazing and it is going to be a showstopper,” she said.

One parent came to Miss Virgo convinced he could do a backflip for the performance and began practising on a trampoline.

“He came back that day for dad dance rehearsal and with no mats, no spotters, no nothing and he whipped out a backflip,” Miss Virgo said.

The end-of-year concert will be at the Goldfields Art Centre at 2pm tomorrow. Contact the academy for tickets, which cost between $20 and $30.
