Dale Williamson kicks 800 in 200th game

Brigades great Dale Williamson passed two milestones over the weekend — kicking his 800th goal in his 200th game at GBSC Sports Park on Saturday.

While the game itself had little in the way of a contest as Brigades came out 108-point winners, all eyes were on Williamson to see if he could become the first ever to kick 800 goals.

He did it with ease kicking three on the weekend and is currently the league’s leading goal kicker.

He is now well clear of Dale Baynes’ all-time goal record of 780 and is firmly in unknown territory for where he could end up.

For a man who has broken many milestones throughout his career he still acknowledged the achievement.

“I mean it was special getting to 800 because I was in my 200th game so that was cool,” he said.

“I never thought I’d ever get to 200 after doing two knees, so yeah made a lot of friends I’ve been at the club now since I was 7. What’s that? 26 years, 27 years nearly. I’ve been pretty lucky I’ve played with two sets of dads and sons so that’s cool.”

Williamson could be even further ahead but has suffered two crippling knee injuries in his career requiring a knee reconstruction in 2010 and tearing his ACL in 2018.

“Yeah the missus was pretty keen on me stopping playing just worried about you know if I did it again how you pay the bills and stuff,” he said on his 2018 injury.

“I probably shouldn’t be playing now, my left knee is that buggered but I still have the drive man so if I stepped away I’d be miserable.”

Williamson praised the great support offered by the club and is circumspect about his future.

“Like I said, it’s just been a really great club man I couldn’t thank them enough for everything they do for us as players as well,” he said.

“I’m not sure what I’ll do, depending on what happens at the end of the year, see how I go next year. I mean, if we win the premiership it’d be hard not to go for a three-peat, but I’m not planning on going to 250 that’s for sure, it’s taken me five years to play 50 games.”
