Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical review at Regal Theatre

While Let It Go induces chills to audiences in one Perth theatre at the moment, another hotly anticipated musical across town is slightly steamier and filled with just as much nostalgia, or possibly even more.

Any teenager who grew up in the 1990s will tell you their screen time revolved around Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon and Joshua Jackson.

When writer and director Roger Kumble added Selma Blair to that mix, he had the ultimate casting for 1999 teen romantic drama Cruel Intentions, a modernised adaptation of the 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses, moved to the world of wealthy New York high school teenagers.

All these years later, even if you might had forgotten just how sordid and devious the storyline, it is the soundtrack that sticks in the memory, where that opening track of Placebo’s Every You Every Me to the closing Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve still immediately take me straight back to the film.
