Cristiano Ronaldo will remain in Manchester as United teammates travel to Perth for Optus Stadium friendly

Global megastar Cristiano Ronaldo will not travel to Perth with Manchester United teammates for Optus Stadium’s football extravaganza this month.

The Premier League giants confirmed on Friday that Ronaldo, who had not reported for pre-season training, had been granted leave and would not be on the club’s charted plane bound for Australia via Thailand today.

It comes as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner pushes for a move away from the club.

“Cristiano Ronaldo will not be part of the Manchester United party scheduled to depart for our pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia on Friday,” a Manchester United spokesperson said.

“He has been granted additional time off to deal with a family issue.”

The Portugal star and his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez lost their newborn son in April.

United are adamant that the star forward is not for sale, despite reported interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Italian club Napoli.

“Cristiano remains under contract with Manchester United for another season and he is not for sale,” the spokesperson said.

United face Aston Villa at Optus Stadium on Friday July 23, with Crystal Palace and Leeds United to play the day before.

It is the second time the Manchester club has travelled to Perth to play at the Burswood venue.

They are also set to play rivals Liverpool in Bangkok before landing in Western Australia.

It is understood that when the WA Government was trying to bring Juventus to Perth three years ago they had Ronaldo’s appearance written into the contract.
