Creative Lab reducing textile landfill through Act Belong Commit

The Geraldton community has another opportunity to divert textile from landfill with The Geraldton Project Creative Lab community event.

Hosted on Saturday, March 12, the event aims to raise awareness of how fabric and other textiles contribute to pollution, while offering solutions to reduce the amount of fabric going to landfill.

The Geraldton Project co-ordinator Lara Sampson said the project was about forming bonds in the community as well as reducing landfill.

“The event will focus on taking loads of kilograms of textile landfill and repurposing material into artwork or decorations. It’s about sustainability and being a part of Act Belong Commit, and Pollinators have been helping us with the locations,” Mrs Sampson said.

Mrs Sampson said there would be an opportunity in the future at Creative Lab where people could create their own porcelain work.

“The event (on Saturday) runs until about 3pm. Our previous programs offered things like edible seaweed and visible mending. It’s about foraging and less wastage, ” Mrs Sampson said.
