Craig McLachlan tells 7NEWS’ Spotlight he tried to take his own life after being charged with sexual assault

Actor Craig McLachlan has revealed that he tried to take his own life after being charged with sexually assaulting his co-stars.

Ahead of the 7NEWS special Spotlight: Craig McLachlan, which is set to air on Sunday, the 55-year-old reveals that he attempted suicide following the allegations.

In 2018, the actor was the star of the ABC’s The Doctor Blake Mysteries drama series but was axed after allegations about inappropriate conduct towards his fellow co-stars were aired by the public broadcaster and the Nine newspapers earlier in year.

Victoria Police later charged him with seven counts of indecent assault and six counts of common law assault against four women on the set of The Rocky Horror Show in 2014.

Although he was acquitted on all charges after a three-day hearing in December last year, he has not worked since being fired more than two years ago.

In the explosive interview, the former Neighbours star said he spent months struggling with the question of “Will I or won’t I?” before deciding his long-term partner, Vanessa Scammell, and his family would be “better off” without him.

He told how he then made an attempt to take his own life.

“Really at that point, all you can think about is (that my partner) Nessie is going to be better off without me. My family will be better off without me,” he told The Australian.

“I’m not afraid to talk about this because I’m hoping it will help people who have been in similar situations.”

Ms Scammell claims the actor was so distressed by the accusations levelled against him, he checked into a mental health facility.

“Craig’s mental health was so fragile … by the end of that meeting, there was no choice. I was worried he was going to take his life,” she says.

“It is actually hard to articulate the horror of what’s happened to us. I can’t put into words every day, every night — I haven’t slept for three years. I still don’t sleep.”

For the past two weeks, McLachlan has been promoting the interview on his social media platforms, where he describes his experience as a “crucifixion”.

7NEWS Spotlight: Craig McLachlan airs at 7pm on Sunday on Seven/GWN7 and on 7plus.
