COVID-19 WA replace: Premier Mark McGowan reveals no new virus cases linked to backpacker outbreak

The WA Department of Health has revealed there were no new local cases of COVID-19 recorded in WA, up until 8pm last night.

But there were 14 new cases of the virus recorded in WA, with nine of those linked to interstate travel and three coming as a result of international travel.

Those people are in quarantine.

The other two cases were positive results returned by truck drivers as part of routine testing at the WA border.

In a social media post – there was no COVID update press conference today – Premier Mark McGowan revealed 25 were still to be tested from the 804 close contacts identified in the backpacker cluster.

In addition, 1452 casual contacts have been identified, with four still to be tested.

In the case of the hotel security guard who was the sole positive case announced on Sunday, fifteen close contacts have been identified with just one still to be tested.

The news came as CBD waterfront bar The Lucky Shag was listed as a COVID exposure site on Tuesday, with anyone at the venue between 11am and 3.30pm on New Year’s Eve, and 1:30pm-11:00pm on December 29, urged to get a COVID test and isolate until they receive a negative result.

Similarly, anyone who was at The Aviary bar on Thursday December 30, between 6.30pm and 10.30pm is also urged to get a test and isolate until getting a negative result.
