Courses to inform and inspire

On top of offering a smorgasbord of building and design-related products, Home Base runs a range of short courses tailored to people building, renovating or redecorating.

Speaking to New Homes, Home Base Marketing and Education Manager Crystal Roberts said the courses gave attendees the knowledge, skills, design inspiration and confidence to successfully create their dream home.

“Crafted by a team of local experts, the courses are designed for anyone looking to build or renovate their home,” she said.

Presented by leading industry experts, Home Base currently has seven courses available that cover building and design-related topics.

“Each presenter is hand-picked based on their knowledge, experience and industry reputation,” Ms Roberts said.

“The courses range from half-day and one-day Saturday courses, through to four- and six-week courses held on weekday evenings.”

Designed to inspire and educate, the courses all aim to achieve something specific for each attendee.

Ms Roberts said one of the most popular courses in the program was the Owner-Builder Course.

“The informative one-day course aims to help people understand the residential construction process and offers a comprehensive overview of the owner-building process, including application requirements and the duties and responsibilities of an owner-builder, as well as offering a basic understanding of the planning, design and construction stages of building,” she said.

“It also gives attendees a chance to have all their questions answered by an industry expert who has a background in building and design.”

For people thinking of building a new home, Ms Roberts urged them to consider the New Homes Course.

“This is the only course in Perth that gives you the opportunity to get quality, independent advice on the process of building a new home,” she said.

“The course aims to prepare those looking to engage a project builder – teaching you how to find the best fit for your desired project, how to get the most out of the building process and ways you can save money on your build without compromising on your new home wish list.

“In comparison, our Sustainable Design and Build Course has been created specifically for those wanting more information on building with alternative building materials, and those who wish to gain an understanding of design principles for creating an energy-efficient home that will ensure comfort whilst saving money on power bills.”

To ensure each attendee gets the most out the course, each design-based course is capped at 30 attendees.

Ms Roberts said the courses had received extremely positive feedback.

“Many people say it was money well spent, as their course offered them lots of ideas they previously hadn’t thought of,” she said.

“We also have many course attendees who enrol in more than one course at a time or return six to 12 months later as they are ready to start the next project or part of a renovation and are keen to learn more.”
