Comet Bay College breaks record at eV Challenge

Comet Bay College students are in need of a new trophy cabinet after their recent haul at the 2021 eV Challenge Powered by Synergy.

The challenge is Australia’s longest-running electric motorsport contest and a leading STEM competition nationally, where teams design, build and race single-seat electric vehicles.

A record-breaking moment from Year 8 student Rocco Came secured the junior championship for the college when he completed the fastest lap ever in the competition’s 20th year.

The Secret Harbour high school also performed well in the challenge’s senior division, with the college’s Design and Technology associate dean and eV challenge program co-ordinator Clay Woolcock commending the dedication of this year’s team.

“We’ve always performed exceptionally at the eV challenge and this year’s participating students should be extremely proud of the work they put in and the results they achieved,” he said.

Mr Woolcock said students dedicated three hours each week to designing, building and racing their electric cars.

“The eV challenge draws upon all the fundamental STEM skills that we promote right across the college — problem-solving, innovation, communication and collaboration. They are skills we know students need to open doors in today’s ever-changing career market.”

The eV challenge had 28 entries this year and was held on October 30 at Wanneroo International Kartway.
