Prizemoney for the 10th anniversary City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder WA PGA Championship in April has been boosted by $50,000 to $200,000.
With Jarryd Felton as defending champion, the anniversary program was supposed to be celebrated last year — originally from October 7-10 and then shifted to late November because of COVID-19.
Organisers eventually cancelled the 2021 program because of strict border restrictions.
But it remains slated for April 21-24, with PGA Australia tour development manager Kim Felton on Wednesday confirming the stakes increase that was already at a record $150,000.
“There’s a lot of work to do, not that we’d ever stopped,” he said.
“But we were hoping something would change, in relation to the WA borders (re-opening) and our wish has come true.
“The (organising) team is pumped and the feedback already has been fantastic, so we’re naturally very excited to announce it (the rescheduled 2021 event) will be going ahead as planned in April.
“As part of growing the tour and building these smaller events, the extra $50,000 puts it in line with all the other Players’ Series events and the State PGA.
“It’s a great purse.”
Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s unique desert course is in line for unprecedented exposure, with the postponed 2021 event to be followed by the 2022 program in October.
Both Goldfields tournaments will be accompanied by extensive television coverage, with broadcasts through Foxtel and Kayo expected to reach 400,000 viewers.
Initial planning was already advanced.
”A lot of the work was already in place for last October,” Mr Felton said.
“Obviously, we’ll have COVID plans in place, with making it a safe event our priority — we’ll do what we need to do, as we have with each of our events in the east.
“We’ll let Tourism WA know we’re on board and align some things, depending on State Government requirements, to that point.
“But the spectacle will certainly be on the course this year, with the broadcasts and promoting the region.
“Let’s put all our eggs into one basket and make it bigger — especially being the 10th anniversary, which will be amazing.”
