Ted Cheeseman is a rising star in the making who is stepping out of the domestic scene into Europe. The Bermondsey boy’s all-action style not only draws interest but in a busy 2018, took care of all comers. Carson Jones, Paul Upton and Asinia Byfield were testing in his past, with the British title and world rankings in the bag.
A social war with Anthony Fowler has put Cheeseman on course for a domestic dust-up later this year, but first he is seeking the vote of confidence in a serious European super-welterweight debate.
Champion Sergio Garcia has a famous sporting name, an unbeaten record and Sergio Martinez behind him. ‘El Nino’ has not boxed outside of Spain before, so will home advantage prove a factor? With Fowler ringside, Cheeseman has plenty to ponder…
What the fighters say…
“I’m not going to play about, and try and go to points, even if I’m winning the whole fight in the 11th round, and I’m cruising. In the 12th round I’m going out there to try and take his head off.”
“I am going to give my best and it’s logical that they have him as the favourite, but I am going to go for it and show that we have the title and we have it for a reason.”
What the experts say…
“Cheeseman will follow in my footsteps. I didn’t follow through with what I should have in my career, but I think he will deliver the goods. He’s powerful, he’s strong. For a young kid, he’s got the mindset of a fully grown 30-year-old man. He’s very mature in his ways. He punches very hard.”
“Cheeseman is progressing really well and that is exactly what we should see. He is developing at the perfect pace and there isn’t really anything you can pick faults in. This is the next step up, but I am expecting that tight defence, his jab and the way he switched from head to body, to be on display again.”
What the rival says…
What the promoter says…
“Boxing is one of those sports when you’ve got to fire at the right moment. Twelve-week camps are great, and he’s well prepared, but if you don’t do it for those 36 minutes, it’s all irrelevant – and that’s the pressure on Ted Cheeseman.”
