Charges laid over Qld traffic worker death

A 28-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving causing death after a traffic controller was killed at work in regional Queensland.

The 35-year-old man was hit by a car just after 4am on Tuesday by an allegedly stolen grey Toyota RAV4 while working on the Ron Camm Bridge in Mackay.

Despite efforts by members of the public to render first aid, he died at the scene.

The car was found abandoned about an hour later, and the 28-year-old was arrested shortly after.

He has now been charged with a range of offences including dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, driving unlicensed and burglary.

Inspector Ian Haughton said that while progress in the case might provide some comfort to the man’s family and friends, their distress would be with them for some time.

The man is expected to face the Mackay Magistrates Court on Friday.
