Celtic go clear with Giakoumakis treble

Giorgos Giakoumakis has produced a dramatic late strike to complete a memorable hat-trick and give Celtic a 3-2 win over Dundee to stretch their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to three points.

In a tension-filled finale at Parkhead, the Greece forward fired in a winner for Ange Postecoglou’s side in the 86th minute to capitalise fully on Rangers’ slip up with a 1-1 draw at Dundee United earlier on Sunday.

Striker Danny Mullen had shot the league’s bottom side Dundee into a shock lead following a 26th-minute corner but the returning Giakoumakis scored two goals in four minutes before the break.

Dark Blues defender Ryan Sweeney headed in an equaliser on the hour mark but the Greek international completed his landmark day by firing in his third from close range from an Anthony Ralston cross.

“That’s why I brought him to the club,” said Australian Postecoglou, when asked about his matchwinner Giakoumakis.

“You saw with the opposition putting so many players in the box, we needed someone with presence and he’s got bags of it.

“He’s been good. He’s been working awfully hard without always getting the rewards. He’s been unlucky at times.”

Postecoglou wasn’t getting carried away by Celtic’s increased league at the top of the table, though.

“We were six points behind not long ago, things change very quickly,” he said.

“What’s important is, even during those times we were behind, we just focused on what we were doing.”

Earlier, Rangers had been brought crashing back to earth following their heroics against Borussia Dortmund as they were held by Dundee United at Tannadice.

The Ibrox side, who pulled off a stunning 4-2 win away to the German giants in the Europa League on Thursday, fell behind to a first-half goal from 20-year-old United defender Ross Graham.

Despite dominating the second half, they only had a Joe Aribo equaliser to show for their efforts.
