Celtic four adrift after draw in Seville

A late equaliser from Robert Andrich secured Bayer Leverkusen a 1-1 draw at Real Betis leaving both sides four points clear of Ange Postecoglu’s Celtic at the midway point of the group stage.

Borja Iglesias opened the scoring from the penalty spot for the club for Seville after Jeremie Frimpong’s 75th minute handball.

But Leverkusen struck back just seven minutes later in fortunate circumstances when Andrich’s long drive found the net via a big deflection off William Carvalho.

Leverkusen are top of group G on goal difference and will be pleased to have bounced back after a weekend domestic thrashing by Bayern Munich before their Bundesliga Rhine derby with Cologne on Sunday.

Celtic had played on Tuesday, taking their first points with a 2-0 win over Ferencvaros.

There were several draws in the Europa League’s other early games, notably Marseille holding Lazio to a goalless encounter in Rome.

Chances went begging at both ends as Lazio striker Ciro Immobile hit the woodwork and had a goal scrapped for marginal offside after a VAR check while Marseille goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha produced a string of saves.

Fenerbache drew 2-2 at home to Royal Antwerp, and Red Star Belgrade gained a 1-1 draw at Danish club Midtjylland. That left Red Star a point clear in group F as Sporting Braga won 1-0 at Ludogorets Razgrad to move closer in second place.
