Celebrations and Gifts That Embody the Holiday Spirit

Brooklyn Community Services also found itself challenged again this year by Covid-19, said Isabella Senzamici, a spokeswoman.

“It’s been absolutely insane this year,” she said. “It’s an all-hands-on-deck situation.”

Donations of toys and corporate volunteerism have been down because of the pandemic, prompting the agency to seek additional grants to pay for toys. Staff members used their lunch hours to wrap gifts with help from clients with developmental disabilities, who learned community-building skills, Ms. Senzamici said. They worked in an assembly line, with cutters, wrappers and sorters all playing roles.

Sets of scarves and earmuffs were particularly in demand this year, Ms. Senzamici said. Other popular gifts included Legos, coloring sets and mini hot chocolate-making machines. The Brooklyn Nets basketball team also donated and assembled bicycles.

In years past, children would receive their gifts at a gathering with a staff member playing Santa Claus. This year, because of the pandemic, gifts went to the children’s schools or homes.

Some items have been unavailable because of supply chain disruptions, and deliveries have been delayed because of the pandemic, said Man Nga Chan, director of volunteerism and outreach.

Despite the logistical challenges, the stakes were too high to fall short, Ms. Senzamici said. The number who will receive toys this year will reach 2,000, including 300 who were affected by the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

“The whole mantra for the program is ‘a gift for every child,’” Ms. Senzamici said.

Volunteers streamed into the expansive basement of the Church of Our Saviour on Park Avenue in Manhattan on Dec. 11 to help with the St. Nicholas Project, which is sponsored by Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New York and provides winter essentials, such as hats, sweaters and gloves, to those who cannot afford them.
