Cable Beach secure spot in grand final after defeating rivals Derby Tigers

Cable Beach have secured themselves a spot in the West Kimberley Football League (WKFL) grand final after defeating their rivals, the Derby Tigers, once again.

It continues the side’s undefeated streak, one of the longest in WA country football, with 23 consecutive wins.

Passions were high on Haynes Oval on Saturday afternoon where a big crowd of local football fans had gathered to cheer their teams on.

Having lost the premiership to the Greenbacks last year and their past two match-ups, the Derby Tigers looked intent on revenge.

But Cable Beach dominated the first term, attacking down their right flank and scoring four goals — including a bomb from beyond the 50 from Jordan King — while the Tigers managed to score just one goal, 4.3 (27) to 1.1 (7).

The Tigers claimed the first goal of the second term and held back Cable Beach’s attacks with their tight defence.

But the Greenbacks started to break the Tiger’s defence by the end of the term, scoring themselves another three goals, keeping themselves well in the lead, 7.5 (47) to 2.1 (13).

The Tigers shone in the third quarter, kicking the first two goals of the term in quick succession, before scoring an additional two goals after some savvy plays in the centre to the forward line where Cable Beach’s sloppy defence let them through, 9.6 (60) to 6.2 (38).

The Tigers defence continued to knock back Cable Beach in the final quarter but the Greenbacks’ attacks were quick and relentless, allowing them to sneak four goals through.

The Tiger’s Bobby Gallagher was a juggernaut in the back line, batting the ball back every time it came into his position but despite his best efforts Cable Beach’s sharpshooters managed to hit their mark, winning the match by 29 points, 13.9 (87) to 9.4 (58).

The two-time consecutive premiership team will now move to the grand final where they will look to make a hat trick of premiership wins.

The Greenbacks can rest easy for now, but no doubt the Tigers will be out for revenge, looking to join the Greenbacks in the grand final once again.

The Broome Towns premiership hopes were also snuffed out by the Looma Eagles in a nail-bitter at Haynes Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Looma was behind the Towns for the first three quarters until the last term where they made an impressive comeback to win the match, kicking seven goals and four behinds to win by just three points, 10.12 (72) to 11.3 (69).

Looma will now move on to the preliminary final where they will face the Derby Tigers for a spot in the grand final.
